Water, Sanitary and Waste Services for Buildings PDF
By:A.F.E. Wise,John Swaffield
Published on 2012-05-23 by Routledge

Water, sanitary and waste services represent a substantial proportion of the cost of construction, averaging 10% of the capital costs of building and with continuing costs in operation and maintenance. Nevertheless, they are often regarded as a 'Cinderella' within the building process. Parts of many different codes and regulations impact on these services, making an overall viewpoint more difficult to get. This new edition of this classic text draws together material from a variety of sources to provide the comprehensive coverage not available elsewhere. It is a resource for the sound design, operation and maintenance of these services and should be on the bookshelf of every building services engineer and architect.

Biophilic Design PDF
By:Stephen R. Kellert,Judith Heerwagen,Martin Mador
Published on 2011-09-26 by John Wiley & Sons

|When nature inspires our architecture-not just how it looks but how buildings and communities actually function-we will have made great strides as a society. Biophilic Design provides us with tremendous insight into the 'why,' then builds us a road map for what is sure to be the next great design journey of our times.| -Rick Fedrizzi, President, CEO and Founding Chairman, U.S. Green Building Council |Having seen firsthand in my company the power of biomimicry to stimulate a wellspring of profitable innovation, I can say unequivocably that biophilic design is the real deal. Kellert, Heerwagen, and Mador have compiled the wisdom of world-renowned experts to produce this exquisite book; it is must reading for scientists, philosophers, engineers, architects and designers, and-most especially-businesspeople. Anyone looking for the key to a new type of prosperity that respects the earth should start here.| -Ray C. Anderson, founder and Chair, Interface, Inc. The groundbreaking guide to the emerging practice of biophilic design This book offers a paradigm shift in how we design and build our buildings and our communities, one that recognizes that the positive experience of natural systems and processes in our buildings and constructed landscapes is critical to human health, performance, and well-being. Biophilic design is about humanity's place in nature and the natural world's place in human society, where mutuality, respect, and enriching relationships can and should exist at all levels and should emerge as the norm rather than the exception. Written for architects, landscape architects, planners, developers, environmental designers, as well as building owners, Biophilic Design: The Theory, Science, and Practice of Bringing Buildings to Life is a guide to the theory, science, and practice of biophilic design. Twenty-three original and timely essays by world-renowned scientists, designers, and practitioners, including Edward O. Wilson, Howard Frumkin, David Orr, Grant Hildebrand, Stephen Kieran, Tim Beatley, Jonathan Rose, Janine Benyus, Roger Ulrich, Bert Gregory, Robert Berkebile, William Browning, and Vivian Loftness, among others, address: * The basic concepts of biophilia, its expression in the built environment, and how biophilic design connects to human biology, evolution, and development. * The science and benefits of biophilic design on human health, childhood development, healthcare, and more. * The practice of biophilic design-how to implement biophilic design strategies to create buildings that connect people with nature and provide comfortable and productive places for people, in which they can live, work, and study. Biophilic design at any scale-from buildings to cities-begins with a few simple questions: How does the built environment affect the natural environment? How will nature affect human experience and aspiration? Most of all, how can we achieve sustained and reciprocal benefits between the two? This prescient, groundbreaking book provides the answers.

Intelligent Buildings PDF
By:Derek Clements-Croome
Published on 2004-01-01 by Thomas Telford

Intelligent Buildings provide stimulating environments for people to work and live in and operate with systems that provide communications and conveniences for various functions to take place, however society and building owners or tenants demand more than this. Buildings are long-term assets so need to be economical, durable, flexible, adaptable and sustainable. There are many stakeholders involved in the process of building a new intelligent building or updating an old one. There is also a need to recognise the pace of change not only in technology but also in society. Intelligent Buildings must demonstrate whole life value. This means an integrated team approach to design, construction and facilities management is essential if a comprehensive set of performance measures are to be implemented and achieved. Written by a collection of prominent figures, this book brings together a body of the latest knowledge about design, management, technology and sustainability set against a background of developments in the cultural landscapes, which affect those living and working in buildings. This book will appeal to architects, engineers, practitioners and all stakeholders who are involved in promoting, designing, constructing or operating buildings. This will include building owners and clients as well as facilities managers and those who design and construct buildings. It will also serve as a reference text for students in architecture, building environmental engineering and other courses concerned with the built environment.

The Aesthetic Economy of Fashion PDF Download. Download free ebook of The Aesthetic Economy of Fashion in PDF format or read online by Joanne Entwistle 9780857851482 Published on 2009-10-01 by Berg

Fashion is bound up with promoting the 'new', concerned with constantly changing aesthetics. The favoured styles or looks of a season arise out of the work of a vast range of different actors who collectively produce, select, distribute and promote the new ideals, before moving on to next season. How, then, are fashionable commodities stabilized long enough for them to be selected, distributed and sold? Since there are few studies that actually examine the work that goes on inside the world of fashion, we know little about these processes. This book addresses this gap in our knowledge by examining how aesthetic products are defined, distributed and valued. It focuses attention on the work of some of the market agents, particularly model agents or 'bookers' and fashion buyers, shaping the aesthetics inside their markets. In analysing their work, Entwistle develops a theoretical framework for understanding the distinctive features of aesthetic marketplaces and the aesthetic calculations within them.

Long overdue is this look at a centuries-old love affair: the close relationship between art and fashion. From the Renaissance, when painters first sought to accurately capture the form, color, and texture of clothing, to today, when models strut down the runway in virtual works of art, the influence has flowed both ways. Illustrated throughout with paintings, designer sketches, and fashion plates, this groundbreaking study includes a chronology of art movements and appendices of fashion designers and fashion houses. It will provide a wealth of eye-opening insights to those who visit showrooms and galleries, and a treasury of creative inspiration for workers in studios and ateliers.
