Unfitting Stories PDF
By:Valerie Raoul,Connie Canam,Angela D. Henderson,Carla Paterson
Published on 2007-03-30 by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press

Unfitting Stories: Narrative Approaches to Disease, Disability, and Trauma illustrates how stories about ill health and suffering have been produced and received from a variety of perspectives. Bringing together the work of Canadian researchers, health professionals, and people with lived experiences of disease, disability, or trauma, it addresses central issues about authority in medical and personal narratives and the value of cross- or interdisciplinary research in understanding such experiences. The book considers the aesthetic dimensions of health-related stories with literary readings that look at how personal accounts of disease, disability, and trauma are crafted by writers and filmmakers into published works. Topics range from psychiatric hospitalization and aestheticizing cancer, to father-daughter incest in film. The collection also deals with the therapeutic or transformative effect of stories with essays about men, sport, and spinal cord injury; narrative teaching at L’Arche (a faith-based network of communities inclusive of people with developmental disabilities); and the construction of a “schizophrenic” identity. A final section examines the polemical functions of narrative, directing attention to the professional and political contexts within which stories are constructed and exchanged. Topics include ableist limits on self-narration; drug addiction and the disease model; and narratives of trauma and Aboriginal post-secondary students. Unfitting Stories is essential reading for researchers using narrative methods or materials, for teachers, students, and professionals working in the field of health services, and for concerned consumers of the health care system. It deals with practical problems relevant to policy-makers as well as theoretical issues of interest to specialists in bioethics, gender analysis, and narrative theory. Read the chapter “Social Trauma and Serial Autobiography: Healing and Beyond” by Bina Freiwald on the Concordia University Library Spectrum Research Repository website.

Identities for Life and Death PDF
By:Robert J. Pellegrini
Published on 2011-02 by AuthorHouse

Identity is seen here as developed from narratives we assimilate as script for the roles we play in real life, thus shaping our destiny - for better or worse, for good or evil. Do we choose to passively, obliviously, allow our |selves| to be formed by whatever story lines |get through| to our consciousness? Or do we take an active role in deciding which story lines influence the |con|struction or |de|struction of the person we become or fail to become? Do we choose to exercise our free will to screen out narratives most likely to have a toxic, dehumanizing, disabling impact on us in favor of story lines most likely to have a creative, humanizing, strengthening impact on our ability to fulfill the best of our human potential? Which of our inner wolves shall we feed? The good, moral one who| helps| us become and do all the best we can be and do? Or shall we feed the evil inner wolf who not only undermines but destroys our creative potential? The waste of human potential due to playing out of toxically narratized, dehumanized roles, seems to be cumulative; once a downward spiral is initiated, it takes on the momentum of a self-perpetuating process. But once initiated, the growth and actualization of potential due to playing out a creatively inspired, humanizing self-script, |also| seems to be cumulative and self-perpetuating. Given the unprecedented challenges confronting humans in this 21st century, these daily messages are designed to encourage assimilation of life-oriented, creative identity-defining narrative themes as protection against death-oriented, toxic ones. Ideally, such efforts will become conjoined with an international grass roots movement to revise toxically divisive individual and group identities, by promoting a sense of humans' interconnectedness to each other as part of a Global Life System. rjp

Neighborhood and Community Environments PDF
By:Irwin Altman,Abraham Wandersman
Published on 2013-06-29 by Springer Science & Business Media

This ninth volume in the series deals with a fascinating and complex topic in the environment and behavior field. Neighborhoods and com munities are in various stages of formation and transition in almost every society, nation, and culture. A variety of political, economic, and social factors have resulted in the formation of new communities and the transformation of older communities. Thus we see nomadic people set tling into stable communities, new towns sprouting up around the world, continuing suburban sprawl, simultaneous deterioration, re newal and gentrification of urban areas, demographic changes in com munities, and so on. As in previous volumes, the range of content, theory, and methods represented in the various chapters is intended to be broadly based, with perspectives rooted in several disciplines-anthropology, history, psychology, sociology, urban studies. Although many other disciplines also play an important role in the study and understanding of neigh borhoods and community environments, we hope that the contributions to this volume will at least present readers with a broad sampling-if not a comprehensive treatment-of the topic.

The Different Faces of Motherhood PDF Free

The Different Faces of Motherhood PDF
By:Beverly Birns,Dale Hay
Published on 2013-06-29 by Springer Science & Business Media

The Different Faces of Motherhood began during a conversation between the two editors, developmental psychologists who have spent our professional careers working with infants and very young children. We are well aware of the impor tance of infants to their mothers and of mothers to their infants. However, we were particularly aware of the fact that, whereas our knowledge about infants increases exponentially . each decade, our assumptions about mothers change relatively little. We were concerned about the theories that underlie the advice given to mothers and also about the assumption that mothers appear to be generic. More and more we have learned about individual differences in babies, but not more and more about individual differences in mothers. Our second concern has been to expand our knowledge about mothers. Our assumptions were few and our questions were many. We believed that the experience of women would vary greatly, both in outlook and in behavior, depending on each woman's age, marital status, finan Cial status, ethnicity, health, education and work experience, as well as a wom an's own experience in her family origin and her relationship to her husband. If we are to understand child development and believe that the early years are important in a child's life, then it seems critical to examine our beliefs about mothers. If we are to understand human development, then being a mother is surely an important area of inquiry.

What do our clothes say about us? How do the clothes we wear affect our moods and emotions? How does the fashion industry encourage us to aspire to look in a certain way? The Psychology of Fashion offers an insightful introduction to the exciting and dynamic world of fashion in relation to human behaviour, from how clothing can affect our cognitive processes to the way retail environments manipulate consumer behaviour. The book explores how fashion design can impact healthy body image, how psychology can inform a more sustainable perspective on the production and disposal of clothing, and why we develop certain shopping behaviours. With fashion imagery ever present in the streets, press and media, The Psychology of Fashion shows how fashion and psychology can make a positive difference to our lives.
